Obesity remains an entity with great global importance, it is known as a risk factor for multiple diseases and incurs in great increases to healthcare costs. In this new decade, the pandemic caused by the SAR-COV-2 virus has emphasized the importance of the control of risk factors and comorbidities in the prognosis of acute diseases.
This study has the main objective of describing the prevalence and degree of complications associated with the infection of the SAR-COV-2 virus in patients previously subjected to bariatric surgery. It has the additional goal of studying these patients in a long-term follow-up with focus on their weight loss and regain.
The universe of studied patients were the patients operated of bariatric surgeries between the years 2010 and 2023, which then came out positive for infection with the SAR-COV-2 virus.
A total of 23 patients fulfilled our inclusion criteria and were then interviewed. They were mainly female with 84% to 26% male, with a median age of 49.6 years and a median body mass index previous the surgery of 49.6 Kg/m2. The average time between surgery and interview was 64 months and the average time between surgery and infection was 30 months. A satisfactory weight loss in the first year after surgery was achieved in 95.6% of patients and in the long-term follow-up 78.3% of patients still had satisfactory weight loss. In terms of infection by the SAR-COV-2 virus 82.6% of patients were symptomatic but none of the studied patients presented moderate or severe symptoms that required hospitalization or presented any of the studied complications.
