Medical training transcends the mere acquisition of scientific knowledge and technical skills. Since the time of Hippocrates, medicine has recognized that becoming a physician entails a profound process of personal transformation, in which the learner not only acquires knowledge of what to do but also of who to be. This process, now known as professional identity formation, finds its most effective vehicle of transmission in mentorship.
